The
Sacramento Perennial Plant Club was started in 1988 by a small group of avid
gardeners desiring to meet others and exchange ideas on coping with a climate
much harsher than the benign coastal region. Gardening in the Central Valley
is ruled by the sun, summer temperatures routinely reaching into the hundreds.
Winters are characterized by mild frost, and a rainfall of approximately 15
inches a year, coming between October and May. Communities using well water
often have to cope with alkaline water, contaminated with toxic-to-plants
minerals. Those on the Valley's edge struggle with shallow hardpan impervious
to shovels. Despite these obstacles, gardening in this area is filled with
possibilities. The club meets 7 PM on the fourth Thursday of the month at
Shepard Garden and Arts Center in McKinley park (map).
A warm welcome, interesting speakers and events await you!
