Twenty-four
years ago two non-gardeners, seven children and numerous pets moved
into a new subdivision. To their horror they found that instead of the
expected postage stamp of a garden they now owned a half acre pie-shaped
lot. Patio was laid, a couple of trees planted, grass seed thrown at
random and all were satisfied.
Then, a fateful Mother's Day arrived and along with it the wonderful
rose "Color Magic". Into the lawn it went and amazingly thrived...A
passion was born. Barbara joined the rose society and the perennial
club. As the years passed raffles were won, money became more liquid
and the garded prospered. The many roses were replaced as the shade
arrived and today there are only a few English roses, shrub roses, a
couple of hybrid teas and some miniatures..They all happily share their
space with numerous plants, many trees including some fruit..Pampus
grass, ivies, honsuckles, wild strawberries and wild violets are trying
their best to take over but, with some help by Barbara & Eugene
they are contained enough to allow shade plants including hydrangeas,
fuschia, hostas, many ferns and ground covers to survive.
Sun lovers struggle, along with the roses, for that little bit of sunshine.
Abutilons, salvia, euphorbia, some grasses, some herbs all share their
space willingly. Wysteria, a couple of climbing roses, some jasmine
all compete for space. Some garden art, some spiritual artifacts, complete
our much-loved private paradise..There will never be too many plants
for us.......
