Daisy Mah is a founding
member of the Sacramento Perennial Plant Club. A many times past president
and program chair, she was instrumental in getting our club up and running.
Daisy works as a supervisor for William Land Park, and is responsible for
a large section of the grounds. Living on a small lot in mid-town Sacramento,
Daisy has little room to garden on her own property. A unique gardening
opportunity came her way when clearing an overgrown, neglected area of the
park. She uncovered a terraced slope with a small artificial stream running
through it, just to the north of Fairytale Town. Research uncovered that
the site was a WPA project from the depression era. Daisy began planting
the area with all the rare and unusual plants she had been keeping in pots
on her own small property. Soon the old abandoned shrubbery became the jewel
of the park. Daisy struggles with having to water by hose, since there is
no irrigation system, and copes with damage from careless visitors, but
she is grateful for the opportunity to have a large garden to work in. The
site has ample free parking next to it, and visitors dropping by during
normal work hours stand a good chance of finding her tending the garden,
and willing to give a spontaneous tour. |
